[ It's still hurts- if he thinks too much of the other kid. He still thinks of what he could have done back then, how he could have changed things. He thinks of walking back in the house, unable to meet the eyes of the others, unable to face the truth outside of a shake of his head before he'd dismissed himself.

But at some point, not facing that truth had seemed shameful. He'd been given a chance- a chance to carry on and do all he could for others. From a small, seemingly powerless kid of all people. A month past and he knows... all he can do is move forward and use the time he's been given to have their backs.

So, maybe that's why it's easy for him to push back against Jim's head. Maybe that's why it's easy, too, to try and cuff him by the side, to try and pull him gently into a weird one-armed quasi-hug against his shoulder with a huff at that comment. A huff that turns into a breath of laughter.
] If you call stick figures art, sure.

[ He leans in close then, voice suddenly hushed. ] Besides, if you wanna leave a permanent mark, you should'a gone for the markers. [ Not that he's done that before when they were younger, nope. Not at all.

You don't see that faint gleam of mischief touching his eyes.

Or maybe you do, Jim. Maybe you do.
