{ He heaves a sigh as he looks at the pieces again. The bright yellow, the blue, the pinkish color... the way there is another scar on his other cheek with a blue eye... Swallowing as he can feel nausea rise inside of him. ]
[ Jim feels something happening. It's like his spine is moving - pushing to get out, because his skin is too small for whatever it is. He rips his coat off and just manages to get the sweater off before a ripple of pain courses through him and he falls to his knees, back in the tablet's circle of light.
He wants to scream but the part of his mind that's aware of Zell still keeps it inside. He grunts, instead, and it turns into a low groan as his body shifts and tears to let a sail unfurl on his back. ]
[ Zell starts moving out of suite to head down the stairs. Another set of footfalls follow behind him as he goes. He knows the doors are locked, but he has to try anyways. He has to get to Jim. He stops as he sees the sail.
He winces knowing that has to hurt. ]
Frickin' hell... Jim?! [ He looks over the screen to try to see any blood or anything. ] C'mon, talk to me! Jim!
[ Jim's not actually sure he wants to know. He's on edge, able to feel the monster close by but unable to see it or do anything about it. Knowing that it's him...
Jim fumbles with the camera anyway, and points the tablet in the monster's direction.
It's like Seifer, stitched together and terrible, but the head is familiar. Not from the faceless nothing-monster a few weeks ago, but because it looks like Jim, here and there. The eyebrows, the nose, the way his glance cuts up to meet the camera before the video rips and distorts completely. ]
[ The video is static-y now, like someone filming any other monster.
Jim's doubled over on the floor, forehead pressed to the cool ground as he struggles to keep breathing. He needs to answer Zell, he knows he does, but it's still hard. ]
[ Kunsel and Zell seemed fine. Sick from that other skyscraper, but they'd been progressively doing better after they left there. But somehow, Zack's pretty sure that's not what Jim's talking about. And it makes something in him already start to sink with dread. ]
[ He can feel his heart pounding with both dread and excitement. Jim is actually going on video for him! However, it's not even aimed at his boyfriend...
or well his full boyfriend. Making a noise as he already picks out his Jim from the stitched together creation. ]
Y-yeah. It's him. He's like Seifer. All pieced together randomly with others... [ His mind is already trying to figure out why they look like that. Was it because they saw Ecks recently? Did it have to do with their fears? ]
[ The static is like another nail in. Frantically skipping steps as he flies down the stairs until he finally reaches the fake church. ]
Hang on, Jim. I'm going to try! [ The answer as to what he wants to try is probably heard soon after as Zell tries the handle of the door, then pounds on it. Trying to get it open even while lock down is in place. ]
Open! C'mon! [ There is a loud slamming as the tablet falls while he hits the door. ]
After we left the skyscraper, when Zell and me were messing around. He didn't feel better. And the more he was around me, the more he touched me, the worse it got.
[ Jim's voice is weak,a nd cuts off when he hears the pounding. It hurts, like his ears are too sensitive now that his sight's been cut off, and he just wants it to - ]
[ He does stop because Jim asks. Ignoring the stinging on his hands and knuckles as he rests his forehead against the door. Realization that again he can't help anyone knocks the wind out of him. Making a low sound that sounds pretty close to a sob. ]
[ The whispering has began. At first Zell put distance between himself and the anomaly, but he couldn't lose it.
The whispering seems to get louder and louder, and nothing was drowning it out. Zell is lucky. Zell is the one who made it one piece. Why did it have to be him?
The sinking feeling of dread for worse when he picked out the pieces all over again. Seeing the parts of his friends from home all stitched together with Seifer of all people. That Zell was actually the lucky one from the whole group. From all of his friends and matron...
It starts getting to him as he is reminded more and more that he's alone right now. He can reaffirm what's real or true. The network isn't helping matters either.
He starts writing out Jim's username. Then he erases it. Then he writes it in again as he shuts the bathroom door behind himself, keeping the whispering mess of his family and friends on the other side.
Hitting the call button as he swallows the lump. ]
J-Jim? [ His voice is shaky. ] Jim, please. Please talk to me. Please.
[ Jim woke up with the clear-headed knowledge of what he needed to do. It's not a question of if, not really. He just has to work up the nerve and figure out how.
A message on his tablet from Zell is what finally spurs him into action. There's something wrong and Jim doesn't know what and he can't fix it until this is dealt with.
Until he kills him.
Jim still has the scalpel. It's dangerously sharp, and it will be easy. He hopes it will be easy. He doesn't want to do this, but he does - but he doesn't - but he has to.
And he's always been good at doing what he has to, so he does, and afterward he's glad that it - he - didn't bleed.
He answers the tablet the second it's done, and sounds clearer than he has since the entire thing started. ]
[ Relief floods him as he hears Jim's voice in response, but it lasts only for a moment. Leaning his head back against the door and hearing the voice or maybe the voices starting up again. Thumping the back of his head against it as if to get them to quiet down, but it doesn't do anything. ]
I don't want it to be true. Please tell me it's a lie, Stars.
[ Choking back a sob. ]
I can't do this. Not alone. I can't... [ The tablet clatters on the ground next to him as he hugs himself. Trying to make himself as small as possible as the voice continues to accuse Zell of being lucky. Being the only one to make it there whole. ]
[ Jim hears the voice in the background and strains to make out what they're saying. His hearing is still enhanced - and his eye sight gone - so he can hear most of it before Zell starts talking.
Tell me it's a lie.
Jim can't. Not if Zell wants the truth from him. He thinks it has to be true. It has to be true, or he just killed his father for nothing.
The tablet falls and Jim flinches. He keeps his voice level, though he's not sure how. ]
[ Jim knows after Tadashi and Cloud that it's impossible to bust out of the buildings after lockdown, but it doesn't stop the new fear clawing its way through him. ]
[ Jim can probably hear the sharp breathing that came as he tries to keep himself from falling apart completely. There is the telltale stinging in the corner of his eyes. Bumping the back of his head against the door again.
They are explaining why. They are talking about only parts of them could make it. ]
Jim. It's them. You couldn't see it, but it's them.
Shi- [ He cuts off his audio before he lets all his cursing go across the feed. And he might be still cursing for a solid minute. It would have made Cid proud. And worse, us implies it's not just him. It's both of them. It's going to be twice as hard to contain and now Jim's gone and- ]
Jim, you stay by yourself and you turn and you might end up hurting someone! I know you're afraid of hurting us, but Zell and Kuns aren't just gonna let us do whatever! But they can't do anything about it if you split off.
[ It's hard to think, now. There's an undercurrent of emotion in Jim that feels familiar - all the resentments and loneliness that have built up over the past seven years - but it's not right. He keeps telling himself it's not right.
